Purple Haze Guitar Case

This has been a crazy ongoing project of mine since around last August. To explain:

My dad has had a Gibson J-160E since he was about 20 years old, having bought it from somebody used for a couple hundred dollars. The case came with it, and both guitar and case have gone with him from NYC to California several times (hitchhiking twice, driving once with my mom) and back and forth from NYC to Key West twice (once to visit and work for a little while, and once to buy a house with my mom) and all up and down the East Coast for work and life over the last fifteen years or so.

About a year ago, he noticed that the case was coming apart and a loose nail had begun to gouge deep scratches in the guitar. He went out and got a new case, and was going to throw the old one out. I thought it might be interesting to paint the outside, and so I took it instead of taking it outside on trash day.

I decided the nasty old snakeskin naugahyde stuff that was on it wasn't worth painting on, so I started peeling it off. The wood underneath was old and some of it splintered off with the covering. I decided I'd recover it to do the painting. Of course, to do this, I had to also remove all the hardware and the lining to get at all the screws. I recovered it and painted it, then decided I just had to finish it and make it functional again. After a few mishaps, I found appropriate hardware and attached it, relined it, and lacquered it.

With breaks between times to work on other projects, such as my Halloween costume and gifts for a whole bunch of people for Christmas, this has been ongoing when I can get myself motivated for the last ten months of so.
